WSSU RAMS SPLIT DOUBLE HEADER WITH ANDERSON UNIVERSITY

 

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Winston-Salem State split a double header with Anderson University on Friday afternoon, winning game one 3-0, before dropping game two, 4-3, at game played at Finch Field in Thomasville, NC.

With the win, WSSU improves to 26-13, while Anderson is at 13-29 on the season.

In game one, in the bottom of the seventh, Ivan Acuna doubled, following by a bunt single from Emilio Abreu. Randal Ortiz reached on a bunt single, scoring Acuna, and Trevor Poole singled to center, allowing Abreu to reach the plate to give WSSU a 2-0 lead.

Randy Norris homered to left field in the eighth, to give the Rams a bit of insurance, and Jordan Carlton closed the door on Anderson, as the Rams took game one, 3-0.

Randy Norris went 2 for 4 with a run scored and a run batted in, and Randal Ortiz went 2 for 3 with a run batted in. Trevor Poole also went 2 for 3 with a run batted in. Ivan Acuna finished 1 for 2 with a run scored and Emilio Abreu went 1 for 4 with a run scored. Norris also had a home run and Acuna had a double.

Will Beeson got the win for the Rams, throwing 7.2 innings of one hit baseball, while striking out nine, and Jordan Carlton got the save, throwing 1.1 innings out of the pen.

In game two, Anderson got on the board early, when Tyler Miller led off game two with a solo home run. The Trojans added one run each in the third, fourth and fifth innings, before Winston-Salem State answered with a two run home run from Ivan Acuna in the bottom of the fifth.

The ball game would come down to the Rams final at-bat, and Brandon Ford hit a solo home run to pull the Rams to within one, at 4-3. After a pitching change, Ivan Acuna one a 3-2 count hit a laser to right field, that would come up just short of a home run, hitting the bottom of the fence. The Rams could not push across the winning run and fell, 4-3.

Ivan Acuna led the Rams, going 2 for 4 with a run scored and two runs batted in. and Brandon Ford went one for 4 with a run scored and a run batted in. Emilio Abreu finished 2 for 4. Landon Steiner went one for two, and Randal Ortiz and Michael McNamara went one for three. Randy Norris also scored a run. Brandon Ford and Ivan Acuna each hit home runs.

Kanoa Hironaka took the loss, going 4.0 innings allowing 10 hits and three earned runs. Marcus McKoy and Landon Biggs, also saw action out of the pen.

The two teams will finish the series tomorrow at 1:00pm at Finch Field with a nine inning contest.
