WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (29-17) broke out early to claim a 6-1 Senior Day win over the Saint Augustine's Falcons (11-27), Sunday afternoon. The Rams took the win behind an efficient offensive effort with six runs on seven hits in the game.
The Rams had a big day at the plate and in the field to take the win. As a team, the Rams totaled seven hits in the game with senior left fielder John Garcia going two-for-two at the plate with a home run, a double, three runs scored, and an RBI. Freshman first base Luke Spiva went one-for-two with a home run and two RBI.
The Rams did most of their damage in the first inning and turned to their defense to close out the remainder of the game. Sophomore catcher Cole Parks got things started when he hit a two-RBI double to score Garcia and senior third base Emilio Abreu to put the Rams on top, 2-0. Spiva added a two-run home run as well to score Parks. Garcia hit a solo home run in the second inning. Parks rounded out the Rams' scoring in the fifth inning when he hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Garcia for the third time in the game. The Rams' sole run allowed came in the seventh inning.
WSSU freshman Tyrese Hearst (4-1) got the pitching win. He started the game and went six innings. He finished the game with no runs allowed on three hits with five strikeouts. Junior Marcus McKoy came in for an inning and recorded one run allowed on two hits with a strikeout.
