Rams Stifled in 12-5 Loss at #8 Georgia College

MILLEDGEVILLE, GA – The Winston-Salem State Rams (30-19) had few problems hitting the ball, but the team struggled to get runs across the plate in a 12-5 road loss to the #8 Georgia College Bobcats (38-10). The Rams took the loss after plating just five runs in the game, but notching 15 hits.

The Rams had a solid day at the plate in the hard-fought loss. As a team, the Rams totaled 15 hits with senior Emilio Abreu leading the way. He went two-for-three with a double, a home run, a run scored and three RBI. Junior second base Nick Williams went three-for-four at the plate. Freshman short stop Wellington Guzman added a two-for-four effort with a double.

Things got tough early for the Rams. After Abreu hit an RBI sacrifice fly by Abreu scored senior outfielder John Garcia gave the team a 1-0 first inning lead, the Rams allowed three first inning runs to the Bobcats and two more second inning runs. Williams added to the score when he hit an RBI single to score sophomore Cole Parks in the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, Abreu hit a two-run home run to pull the Rams to within a run of the Bobcats, 5-4. Junior centerfielder Randy Norris hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score junior Rashad Stewart and tied the game, 5-5 in the sixth inning. However, the Rams would not get across the plate again while Georgia College added five sixth inning runs an two more eighth inning runs to seal the Rams' 12-5 loss.

WSSU redshirt-freshman Jalen Scott (4-6) took the pitching loss. He started the game and went 5.1 innings with 10 runs allowed (eight earned) on eight hits. He recorded a pair of strikeouts. Junior Kyle Taylor added 1.2 innings of work with a run scored (one earned) on two hits with a strikeout. Freshman Peyton Bennett came in for an inning with a run scored (one earned) with a strikeout.
