WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Marquez Jones scored 25 points and Preston Ross added 20 points as the Winston-Salem State University Rams rolled past Bowie State 77-57 Monday night at the CE Gaines Center on the WSSU campus.
The win improves the Winston-Salem State Rams overall record to 7-6, and 2-1 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, while Bowie State falls 6-8 overall, 0-3 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
It was all Rams all night long, as WSSU started hot and never cooled off as Marquez Jones was on fire from behind the three point arc, and Preston Ross was solid in all aspects of the game as the Rams jumped out to a 13-5 lead, before the Bowie State Bulldogs managed to claw their way back to tie the game at 19-19 midway through the first half.
A 15-2 run by WSSU quickly got their lead back to double figures before Bowie would fight their way back to within five points at 37-32. WSSU scored the final five points of the half on a 3-pointer by Javan Wells and two free throws by WyKevin Bazemore to give WSSU a 42-32 halftime advantage.
Bowie State come out of the half and put some pressure on the home standing Rams, as they cut into the WSSU lead by trimming it to six points, before the Rams would go on a 18-5 run to push the lead to 21 points at 62-41 with a little over 12 minutes left to play.
The Rams would keep their foot on the gas, as Marquez Jones continued his hot shooting, and the inside presence of Preston Ross and WyKevin Bazemore took control.
Bowie State would have one last run left in them as they would go on a 11-4 run to cut into the lead, but once again the Rams would keep the Bulldogs at bay with strong play from the entire team, as they would finish the game on a 11-5 to take a 77-57 win over Bowie State.
For the Rams, Marquez Jones finished with 25 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Preston Ross added 20 points and six rebounds. Tyre Desmore added 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal, while WyKevin Bazemore chipped in eight points, a game-high 13 rebounds and two steals. Javan Wells added five points and four rebounds to go with two steals.
Bowie State was led by Ray Gatling who finished with 22 points, while Andre Jackson added seven points and six rebounds. Justin Beck also added seven points for the Bulldogs.
Winston-Salem State will now hit the road for three games in five days, as they travel to Virginia State on Thursday; Chowan University on Saturday and Elizabeth City State on Monday night.
