WSSU Rams Grit Out A Big 72-60 Upset Win Over #20 Lynn University

BOCA RATON, FL – Winston-Salem State used a 10-3 run late, and relied on defensive pressure to force 20 turnovers, as the Rams pulled of a 72-60 upset o #20 Lynn University Friday night at the Embassy Suites Boca Raton Invitational.

With the win, Winston-Salem State improves to 7-1 overall, while Lynn University falls to 6-2 overall.

Lynn University jumped out early on the Rams, and held a 14-6 lead before WSSU was able to scratch and claw their way back to tie the game at 14-14 with 9:08 left in the first half.

The game would go back and forth for the remaining minutes of the first half, before Winston-Salem State would go on a 8-2 run to close out the half, and take a 34-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.

As the second half began, Lynn University would force the Rams into several quick turnovers and by the 13:05 mark, the Fighting Knights had tied the game and eventually would push their lead to six points. At 53-49 with 8:05 left to play.

But after the under eight minute media timeout, is when the WSSU Rams turned up the focus, and used a 10-2 run to take back the lead for good.

And it was a full team effort that propelled the Rams forward, and WSSU's 23-7 run over the final eight minutes would give the Rams a big upset win over the previously #20 ranked Fighting Knights, 72-60.

The undersized Rams out rebounded Lynn University 42-40, and forced them into 20 turnovers, in which the Rams turned into 24 points. WSSU also held the Knights to just 2 of 19 shooting from behind the 3 point arc.

The Rams were led in scoring by Marquez Jones who finished with a game high 23 points, to go with four assists, three rebounds and two steals. Donta Harper added 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal. WyKevin Bazemore picked up his seventh double-double of the year with 11 points and a game high 15 rebounds, to go with two blocked shots, one assist and one steal. Javan Wells and Terrell Leach each chipped in nine points, with Wells also adding five assists and two steals.

Lynn University was led by Aaron Harrison who scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals, while Fred Landers added 10 points.
