WINSTON-SALEM, NC – WSSU had four players score in double figures, as the Rams held on to drop the Lees McRae Bobcats, 83-79 on Tuesday night in the CE Gaines Center.
The win moves Winston-Salem State to 2-1 on the season, while Lees McRae falls to 0-3.
After falling behind early, and struggling from the free throw line, WSSU used a 28-8 run over the final 7:19 of the first half to pull away from Lees McRae at the half, 50-32.
But tonight's game was a tale of two halves, as Lees McRae started the second half on fire, and by the 7:13 mark, had cut the Rams lead to just three points, at 69-66.
But the Rams fought back, and would hold off the Bobcats, with a strong defensive effort down the stretch, and eventually increased their lead to nine points, and held on for the 83-79 win.
WSSU won the rebound battle, 40-37, and on the free throw line, where the Rams went 27 of 42, while the Bobcats went just four of 17 from the Charity stripe.
For WSSU, Robert Colon led the way with 22 points, three rebounds, two steals and an assist. Williams Crandell added 16 points, nine rebounds and two assists, while Carlos Rankins also added 16 points, one steal and one assist. Jamel McAllister finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds and two assists.
LePreece Lynch led the Bobcats with 20 points, with Donte Falls adding 13 points, nine rebounds and six assists, and Jordan Turner finished with 12 points. Chad Hicks added 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.
The WSSU Rams will jump right back into action on Saturday night, wwhen they will travel to Pembroke, NC to take on the UNC Pembroke Braves at 1:00pm.
