WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Elizabeth City State outscored the Rams 43-32 in the second half, en route to a 83-81 win at the CE Gaines Center over Winston-Salem State.
With the loss WSSU falls to 8-112 overall, 4-6 in the CIAA. Elizabeth City State improves to 1-17 overall.
The WSSU Rams started the game quick and on fire, as they ran out to an early 14 points lead at 18-4, before ECSU regroup and chipped away at WSSU's advantage.
The Rams would keep the pressure on and eventually increased their lead to 18 points at 40-22.
Winston-Salem State would keep the Vikings at bay with some tough defense and hot shooting, and took a nine point lead, 49-40, into the locker room at the half.
Elizabeth city reversed the first half and quickly erased the Rams lead to tie the game at 57-57, with 14:55 remaining.
Julius Barnes gave the lead back to WSSU on a 3-pointer, before the game would go back and forth to the remainder of the game.
Coming down the final stretch, the game would be tied three times, before ECSU's Matthew Mcintosh hit a layup with 10 seconds left to give the Vikings a 83-81 lead.
Robert Colon would attempt a 3-pointer that was side and Xavier mills rebounds and put back came off the rim, allowing Elizabeth City to run out the clock.
The game was a tale of two halves for the Rams, as in the first half, they shot a blistering 50%, but could only must 22% in the second half.
Elizabeth City State was led by Jordan Jones, who scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and John Maynor added 14 points. Matthew McIntosh finished with 11 points and eight rebounds, an dJavonte Miles and Shyhied Petteway each chipped in 10 points.
Winston-Salem State University will return to action on Monday night at the Gaines Center, as the Rams will host Elizabeth City State University at 7:30pm.
