Rams Take an 87-72 Loss to Morehouse at CIAA/SIAC Challenge

RALEIGH, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (1-2) gave a solid effort, but the team could not stop the Morehouse Tigers (3-0) in an 87-72 loss in the opening game of the CIAA/SIAC Challenge hosted by Shaw University on the campus of Shaw University. The Rams took the loss behind a solid shooting effort, but the team could not find a way to stop the scorching hot Maroon Tigers.

The Rams had a strong offensive showing in the game, but the team struggled on defense. As a team, the Rams shot 40.0% (26-of-65) from the floor while Morehouse shot 52.2% (36-of-69) from the floor. WSSU junior forward Jamel McAllister led the way for the Rams with a team-high 19 points while sophomore guard Robert Colon added 12 points off the bench. Junior guard Derick Brewer, Jr. added 11 points.

Things looked good early for the Rams as the team took a 13-9 lead after a three-pointer from sophomore guard Julius Barnes with 14:46. However, the good start didn't last long as Morehouse soon overtook the Rams and left the team trailing, 32-22 with 8:04 left in the first half. Barnes would tie the game, 36-36 with a three-pointer at the 4:59 mark. Though the Rams regained the lead, 39-38 with 3:45 left in the half, the good play did not last long as the team ended the half trailing, 51-41.

In the second half, the Rams started with a solid start, cutting their deficit in half, 51-46 in the first minute, but the team soon fell behind once again, 56-46 with 16:43 left to play. The Rams were able to get back into the game as a Brewer, Jr. three-pointer with 8:12 left to play capped a 7-2 run by the Rams and pulled the team to within four points, 67-64.  The Rams stayed within four points of the Maroon Tigers for much of the remainder of the half, but the team faded late with Morehouse pulling away. After falling behind, 81-69 with 1:51 left to play, a McAllister three-pointer was all that the team could manage as Morehouse hit some critical free throws late to pull away with the 87-72 win over the Rams.

With the loss, the Rams fall to 1-2 on the season. The Rams will return to action, tomorrow when the team takes on the Fort Valley State Wildcats in a 6:00 p.m. game at Spaulding Gymnasium on the campus of Shaw University.
