CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (5-20, 3-12 CIAA) had a solid night, but the team could not keep up with the high-powered Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (18-8, 11-4 CIAA) in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division game, Wednesday evening. The Rams had a strong shooting effort in the game, but the team was no match for a Johnson C. Smith team that shot a scorching hot 53.6% (30-of-56) in the game.
The Rams took the loss in spite of a quality offensive effort. As a team, the Rams shot a solid 42/2% (27-of-64) from the field. WSSU junior forward William Crandell led the way with 20 points and seven rebounds in the game. Sophomore guard Robert Colon added 21 points in the game as well. Junior forward Chigozie Ngene-Igwe added 11 points with 13 rebounds as well.
The Rams came out with an intense early effort in the game; however the effort fell short later in the half. The Rams built a 27-23 lead after a three-pointer from sophomore guard Julius Barnes with 9:59 left in the first half. However, the Rams soon found themselves trailing when Johnson C. Smith went on a 16-2 run that left the Rams trailing, 39-29. In the final minutes of the half, the Rams fell behind by as many as 16 points before an Ngene-Igwe lay-up at the buzzer left the Rams trailing 48-34 at halftime.
The second half saw an improved effort from the Rams, but the team was not quite able to pull out the win. The Rams outscored the Golden Bulls 45-40 in the half. Midway through the half, the Rams cut their deficit down to 10 points, 64-54, after a lay-up from junior guard Derrick Farquharson with 9:28 left to play. In the final minutes, the Rams continued attempting to claw their way back in the game, but the Golden Bulls would not relent. A Colon three-pointer with 00:33 left to play pulled the Rams to within 10 points, 84-74. However, it was as close as the Rams would get until a Crandell dunk in the final seconds left the team with the 88-79 loss.
With the loss, the Rams fall to 5-20 overall and 3-12 in CIAA play. The Rams fall to 1-8 in the CIAA Southern Division. The Rams will return to action, Saturday when the team hosts the Livingstone Blue Bears in a 4:00 p.m. senior day game.
