#1 Rams to Face #5 Fayetteville State In CIAA Tournament Quarterfinals
March 2, 2011
CHARLOTTE, NC - The top-seeded Winston-Salem State Rams (19-6) will take on a familiar foe, Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the 66th Annual Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Basketball Tournament. The Rams will take on the fifth-seeded Fayetteville State Broncos (14-13) at 7:00 p.m. at Time Warner Cable Arena. The Rams and Broncos will meet for the second time in five days after the two teams met in the regular season finale for both squads.
The top-seeded Rams received an opening round bye by virtue of claiming the CIAA Southern Division title while the Broncos reached the quarterfinal round with a 74-58 win over fourth-seeded Virginia State Trojans in the opening round of the tournament.
The Rams and Broncos had an emotional battle in their last meeting as the game came down to its final seconds with the Rams pulling out the 74-69 win after holding on to a two-point lead in the final minute of the game. The win was the second time this season that the Rams have defeated the Broncos after a 76-62 win over the Broncos in front of a capacity crowd at the C.E. Gaines Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Rams will need to defeat the Broncos for the third time this season if the team is to advance to the seminal round of the tournament. The Rams will be making their first appearance in the CIAA Basketball Tournament since 2006 when the team ended their tournament run with a 71-67 loss to Bowie State in the quarterfinal round of the tournament.
The Rams and Broncos are scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff at Time Warner Cable Arena in downtown Charlotte, N.C. A live video stream of the game will be available at www.TheCIAA.com.
