WINSTON-SALEM, NC – There is no doubt about this ballot as Winston-Salem State University junior defensive back Daryus Skinner was named the Hero Sports D2 Defensive Player of the Year. He earned the honor after totaling 1,261 votes (27.65%) in the Hero Sports Annual D2 Defensive Player of the Year Poll.
The honor is another in a big year of honors for the Rockingham, North Carolina native. In addition to his recognition from Hero Sports, Skinner was also named the 2018 HBCU GameDay National Defensive Player of the Year as well as earning a spot on the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (CCA) All-Super Region 2 team where he earned second team honors. He was also a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) First Team All-Conference selection.
Skinner earned all of the honors after a tremendous junior season. He pulled in 11 interceptions in just nine games, one shy of tying the school record, and led the nation in interceptions. He also totaled 30 tackles (15 solo) along with two pass breakups. Making the season more impressive is the fact that the Rams played just nine games as one game was cancelled due to Hurricane Florence.
