Rams Golfers Earn Third Place Finish At WSSU Invitational; SC State Earns Team Medalist Honors :: WSSU places third in first-ever Rams Golf Invitational

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State University men's golf team posted a two day team total of 689 (348-341) at Winston-Lake Golf Course as the Rams completed play in the inaugural WSSU Golf Invitational with a third-place finish. The Bulldogs of South Carolina State University earned the team title in the five-team tournament with a team total of 628 (328-300) as student-athletes from five Historically Black Colleges/Universities posted competitive scores despite less-than-favorable chilly weather conditions.

The par 71, 6,214 yard course, constructed with suffocatingly narrow fairways proved challenging for the 25-golfer field as only one player recorded a round under pair over the course of the two day event as team-champion South Carolina State University's Cory Jozefiak recorded the lone under-par score of 70 which he would post in final-round action en route to individual medalist honors.

Jozefiak posted a first-round 78 and final round 70 as he captured the individual medalist honors by five strokes. Jozefiak's South Carolina State University teammate Hector Arroyave would finish the two-day event five strokes off the lead as he earned silver medalist honors with a two-day total of 153 (79-74).

Enobong Udo of Johnson C. Smith University earned bronze medalist honors with a two-day total of 156. Udo, who turned in the lowest score of the first round, a 76, posted an 80 in final-round action en route to the third-place finish.

Hampton University earned second place honors in the tournament as they posted a two-day total of 653 (346-307).

Final round action for the Rams was highlighted by Jerrell Fields' team-low round of 79 as Fields capped off the event with a tie for sixth place overall with a 17 over par total of 159 (80-79).

Fields was followed by Joshua Sherrill (83), Lance Holmes (87), Steven Mason (92) and Kenneth Lathan (92).

WSSU's Zachary Yelder turned in a score of 89 yet was competing unattached in the tournament with his score not being included in the Rams' team total.

Winston-Salem State University returns to action on April 4-6, 2008 in Orangeburg, S.C. as they participate in the South Carolina State University Bulldog Golf Invitational at Hillcrest Golf Club.
