COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Winston-Salem State University men’s golf team sits in second place overall after the first round of play from the Benedict College HBCU Tournament being played in Columbia, S.C. as the Rams turned in a team total of 325. WSSU newcomer Zach Sheets carded WSSU’s lowest round of the day as he fired a first-round 79 to lead the Rams to a second-place seeding after the first two rounds of play.
The Rams sit only four strokes off the pace set by Morehouse College who carded a first-round team total of 321.
“We plan to play even better in the second round and bring home a tournament title” WSSU head golf coach Robert Bethea said via telephone. “Zach played very well and Kenny [Lathan] struck the ball well, as did Devin [Cherry]. If we make some more putts we will be right in the hunt” Bethea added.
The Rams fared well in first day action as Devin Cherry carded an opening-round 81, Glendon Mabe tallied a first-round 81 and Kenny Lathan shot an 80.
Winston-Salem State University will return to action in the morning as they play the final 18 holes of the tournament.
