Rams Claim 2010 Black College Invitational Golf Championship Title

Sept. 27, 2010

ATLANTA, GA - The Winston-Salem State University golf team had another outstanding showing this weekend when the team won the NCAA Division II section of the 2010 Black College Invitational Golf Championship in Atlanta, Georgia this weekend. The win marks the second straight week of top two performances as the Rams finished second at the South Carolina HBCU Golf Classic in Columbia, South Carolina last weekend.

"The team has been showing great spirits and has been doing a great job," WSSU head golf coach Robert Bethea said after the tournament. "We're going to keep up these efforts and continue towards reaching for a championship."

After posting a team 304 on the opening day of the tournament and taking first place, the Rams held on to win the event title by five strokes when play was suspended after 15 holes due to inclement weather. It was the newcomer duo of Zachary Sheets and Glendon Mabe who led the way for the Rams. Mabe led the Rams with a 73 on the opening day. Sheets wasn't far behind with a 75.

The Rams will get a slight break as the team won't return to action until Sunday, October 10th when the team takes part in the 2010 Trojan Fall Classic hosted by Virginia State University.
