PORT ST. LUCIE, FL - The Winston-Salem State Rams golf team will look for a strong ending to the season when the team takes part in the 25th PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship presented by Brown Capital Management, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Playing in one of the largest fields of competition against nearly 200 student-athletes from Historically Black Colleges or Universities, the Rams will look to perform on their biggest stage.
The Rams will take the course against teams from some of the top NCAA Division II golf, including last year's tournament champion, the Morehouse College Tigers. Also taking the course will be teams from the reigning Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) champion Virginia State, fellow CIAA member Lincoln (Pa.), and Benedict College.
The Rams will carry a head of steam into the tournament as the team is coming off of four straight top two finishes, including winning the 2011 WSSU Spring Golf Challenge and placing second at the 2011 CIAA Championships. Freshman Zachary Sheets will lead the way for the Rams as he holds the team's top average at 76.5. Junior James Draper is a close second on the team at 79.5. Draper won the 2011 WSSU Spring Golf Challenge.
The action won't be limited to the golf course, however, as student-athletes from the teams will be allowed to participate in the Business of Golf Career Expo. The event will allow participants the opportunity to learn about additional employment opportunities in manufacturing, media, trade, golf course management, and the game's premier governing bodies. In addition, participating student-athletes will have the opportunity to present resumes for internships and employment.
The Rams will begin play at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida, Friday morning. For more information on Rams golf, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
