RICHMOND, VA – The Winston-Salem State Rams men's and women's cross country teams made some strong statements, Friday afternoon with some great performances at the Panther Classic hosted by Virginia Union University. The Rams women's cross country team took first place in the women's 5K run while the Rams men's team placed fourth in the men's 8K run.
The Rams women put on a stellar performance when they won the event with just 26 points. The team dominated the meet when they claimed five of the top 10 finishes. Sophomore Domtilla Kiplagat led the way when she won the meet with a 17:36.3 while senior Fawzia Kheir placed second with a 17:41.2. Senior Phyllis Cheruyiot added a fourth place finish when she ran an 18:50.1 while fellow senior Taska Johnson placed ninth with a 19:53.1 and senior Micalyne Zimmerman rounded out the effort with a 19:54.5.
The Rams men's team also had a strong day, totaling 92 points in the men's 8K run to place fourth at the event. WSSU freshman Mitchell Brown paced the Rams when he placed third at the meet with a 29:01.5 while senior Harold Blakely added a 16th place finish with a 31:39.6. Junior Julian Massey rounded out the WSSU top three finishers with a 34:19.6 to place 24th.
The Rams will return to action next Friday, when the team heads to nearby Kernersville, N.C. to take part in the Wake Forest Invitational at the Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex.
