Rams Open Cross Country Season at Chik-Fil-A Invitational

SALISBURY, NC – The Winston-Salem State University Rams cross country teams opened the 2018 season, Saturday morning when the teams took part in the Chik-Fil-A Invitational hosted by Catawba University. Both teams saw some great efforts in their first action of the season.

"We did very well, considering we just started three weeks ago, coming together as a team," WSSU head coach Kaymarie Jones. "We really wanted to see where the girls were and now that we know where we are, I think we're going to have a great season."

The Rams women's team placed sixth at the meet with 156 total points at the meet. WSSU sophomore Ojai Brooks led the way for the Rams when she placed 27th in the women's 5K run with a 24:05.3. Fellow sophomore Victoria Porter placed 28th when she ran a 24:21.3. Sophomore Amique Willis placed 37th with a 25:40.3 while sophomore Qjuanda Rowe placed a close 38th with a 25:40.4.

The Rams men's team also had a strong day. Junior Jordan Reaves led the way for the Rams, placing 74th in the men's 8k run with a 36:15.9 while sophomore Ashley Simon placed 92nd with a 46:15.1.

"It felt really good to be back out on the course today," Reaves said. "After battling with an injury last season, it felt to be back. I have a lot to work on, but it felt really good to be back."

In addition to being the first meet of the season for the Rams, the meet was also the coaching debut for head coach Kaymarie Jones. "It was fun" Jones added. "Now I know what it feels like to be Ramily…It's a great feeling to be in this position and to represent WSSU."

The Rams will return to action next weekend when the team heads to Fayetteville, N.C. to take part in the Monarch Classic hosted by Methodist University.
