CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (17-9, 12-4 CIAA, 6-4 CIAA South) will put their successful 2011-12 season behind them when the team opens play at the 2012 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Basketball Championship Tournament. After posting a 17-9 record in the regular season, the Lady Rams will look to carry their success into the post-season as they take on the sixth-seeded Lincoln (Pa.) Lady Lions (7-21, 3-13 CIAA, 3-7 CIAA North) in a 5:00 p.m. game, Tuesday in the opening round of the tournament.
With the conference championship as their goals, the Lady Rams remain focused on the fundamentals in their efforts to pursue the title. "We must play hard for 40 minutes," WSSU women's basketball head coach Stephen Joyner, Jr. said. "Defending, rebounding, and taking care of the ball will be our focus this week."
After posting a 6-4 record to place third in the CIAA Southern Division, the Lady Rams will open the tournament against the #6 seed from the CIAA Northern Division, the Lincoln (Pa.) Lady Lions, who posted a 3-7 division record. The two teams met in January with the Lady Rams taking a 94-44 home win over the Lady Lions. However, the Lady Rams will look to put their past success behind them as they take the court this week.
"We have to forget every game. The wins and the losses," Joyner, Jr. added. "Our record is 0-0 right now."
Leading the Lady Rams into the tournament will be the All-CIAA tandem of senior guard Courtney Medley and junior guard Jasmine Newkirk. Medley leads the Lady Rams, averaging 13.9 points per game, while Newkirk averages 12.5 points per game. The duo does more than score as Medley is the Lady Rams' leading rebounder at 5.0 rebounds per game, while Newkirk leads the Lady Rams with 87 total assists this season.
The Lady Rams and Lady Lions are scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, N.C. For more information on Lady Rams basketball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
