Lady Rams Return to the Road to Take on Radford Highlanders

GAME NOTES

RADFORD, VA – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (0-1) will be on the road again when the team heads to Radford, Virginia to take on the Radford Highlanders (1-0), Wednesday evening. Though the team had a solid offensive outing in their season opener, the team will look for an improved defensive effort when they return to action against the Highlanders.

The Lady Rams will get another shot against an NCAA Division I opponent when they take on the Highlanders. The team opened the season at fellow NCAA Division I opponent UNC-Asheville, which is also a member of the Big South Conference. While the Lady Rams shot the ball well in the 83-74 road loss, the team struggled defensively, allowing 83 points to their opponents. Still, the offensive effort was impressive for the Lady Rams, who were led by sophomore guard Taylar Wells, who scored a career-high 24 points in the game. Junior guard Jasmine Newkirk added 17 points as well while senior guard Courtney Medley recorded the third double-double of her career in the game with 14 points and 11 rebounds in the game.

One of the biggest challenges for the Lady Rams will be stopping a Radford team that totaled 100 points in their season opener. The team dominated Eastern Mennonite for a 100-42 win, Saturday. The Highlanders were led by junior guard Ashley Buckhannon’s 17 points in the game. She was one of four players to reach double-digit scoring in the game. Sophomore forward Tianna Cannon added a team-high eight rebounds in the game as well.

The Lady Rams and Highlanders are scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start at the Dedmon Center on the campus of Radford University in Radford, Virginia.
