CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston-Salem State University Rams women's basketball will head into the 2017-18 season with a lot to prove as the team was picked to finish eighth in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Preseason Predicted Order of Finish, Wednesday evening. Winston-Salem State senior center Kandace Tate was also named to the 2017-18 PreSeason All-CIAA team as well.
The Rams will head into the season looking to prove the predictions wrong for the second straight season. Last season, the Rams were picked to finish ninth in the preseason. Instead, the Rams finished the season with a 14-14 overall record and a 9-7 record in CIAA play and tied for a second place finish in the CIAA Southern Division. This season, the Rams were picked to finish a spot ahead, in eighth this season and will look to prove the prediction wrong for a second straight season.
Leading the way for the Rams will be senior center Kandace Tate, who earned a spot on the 2017-18 Preseason All-CIAA team. She took home the honor after leading the Rams' scoring effort, averaging 9.6 points per game along with ranking second on the team in rebounding at 5.8 rebounds per game. She also ranked third in the CIAA in blocked shots with 44 blocks. For her efforts, she was named to the CIAA All-Conference team last season.
Winston-Salem State head coach L'Tona Lamonte and other CIAA coaches will speak at the 2017 CIAA Basketball Media Day, tomorrow morning at the Renaissance Charlotte Suites Hotel in Charlotte, N.C. WSSU is scheduled to speak at 9:00 a.m.
