Lady Rams Picked to Finish Fourth in CIAA Southern Division
Oct. 7, 2010
CHARLOTTE, NC - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams were welcomed back to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAA) in a strong way as the team was picked to finish fourth in the CIAA Southern Division. The announcement was made at the 2010-11 CIAA Basketball Press Conference at the Charlotte Convention Center Thursday afternoon.
After posting a 2-28 record last season, the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams were well-represented with the fourth-place prediction, but WSSU head women's basketball coach Stephen Joyner, Jr. admits that the team has a lot of work to do. "We've got a lot of work to do," Joyner, Jr. said. "After struggling in the last few seasons, we've all been working to change the attitudes and culture to one of winning."
Leading the way for the Lady Rams will be senior forward Vontisha Woods, who earned a spot on the 2010-11 preseason All-CIAA team. Last season, Woods came close to averaging a double-double for the season, leading the Lady Rams in scoring (9.9 ppg) and rebounding (8.1 rpg). She also added a team-high 17 blocked shots.
The 2010-11 Lady Rams will play their first season in the CIAA since 2005-06. After playing five seasons in NCAA Division I, the 2010-11 Lady Rams are looking forward to returning to the conference where the team has amassed a strong, storied history. "There's no place like home," Joyner said.
The 2010-11 Winston-Salem State Lady Rams will make their debut to the home fans at Ram Madness on Friday, October 15th at the C.E. Gaines Center. In addition to introducing both the 2010-11 Rams and Lady Rams basketball teams, the event will feature a number of fun activities and events for the WSSU faithful.
