RALEIGH, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (16-10, 9-1 CIAA) showed some great play on both sides of the ball to take home a 9-1 win over the Shaw Lady Bears, Friday afternoon. The Lady Rams scored nine runs on eight hits to take home the win and allowed just three hits and one run in the game to take the victory.
It took four innings for the Lady Rams to score eight runs in the game, including three sixth inning runs to put the game away. WSSU junior infielder Katrina Bartlett led the way for the Lady Rams with three RBI on a one-for-two effort at the plate. She drove in a pair of runs in the fifth inning with a two RBI single and followed the effort in the sixth inning when she was hit by a pitch to score her third RBI of the game. The duo of senior designated player Andreya O'Brien and senior outfielder Tanaya Pettus both recorded a pair of hits in the game as well.
The Lady Rams took a 4-1 lead into the fourth inning before allowing a Shaw score in the bottom of the inning. The team answered with five runs in the fifth and sixth innings, including scoring three sixth inning runs to go ahead 9-1. The team then turned to its defense to hold Shaw scoreless and finish the game.
WSSU freshman pitcher Mercedes Hargett (7-5) took home the pitching victory, going all six innings with three hits and just one run allowed. She finished the game with 12 strikeouts.
