Hargett Allows One Hit in 1-0 WSSU Win at Fayetteville State

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (18-10, 11-1 CIAA) had to dig deep to pull out a late 1-0 road win over the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos (8-16, 4-1 CIAA), Saturday afternoon. After taking a 0-0 tie into the seventh inning, senior designated player Andreya O'Brien drove in junior third base Katrina Bartlett to lead the Lady Rams to their sixth straight Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division win.

The WSSU clutch hitting could not overshadow a dominant pitching performance from WSSU freshman Mercedes Hargett, who allowed just one hit in the game. In addition to allowing just one hit, she also finished the game with no walks allowed and five strikeouts.

The sole score of the game came from an O'Brien RBI single up the middle that followed a lead-off triple by Bartlett. As a team, the Lady Rams totaled seven hits in the game, led by junior outfielder Kiah Ruffin's two-for-four effort at the plate. However, it was O'Brien who drove in the sole run of the game.
