WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (20-10) clicked on all cylinders when the team took a 9-0 five-inning win over the Bluefield State Blues (5-16), Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Rams turned in a stellar defensive effort, combined with some great offense to take the five-inning victory.
As a team, the Lady Rams finished the game with 13 hits in five innings. Freshman pitcher Mercedes Hargett led the way with a two-for-two effort at the plate with a double and three RBI. Fellow freshman Chyna Riley added a three-for-three effort at the plate with a run scored as well. Junior infielder Monet Daly added a pair of runs scored.
After opening the game with a pair of first inning runs, the Lady Rams crossed home plate in the fourth and fifth innings with the second inning being the only scoreless inning for the team. The team broke things open in the fourth inning when junior outfielder Kiah Ruffin drove in a pair of runs on a two-RBI single to second base. After taking a 7-0 lead into the fifth inning, the Lady Rams closed out the game when Hargett hit a two-RBI double into left field that gave the Lady Rams the 9-0 victory.
Defensively, the Lady Rams commanded the game with Hargett (9-5) getting the pitching victory with one hit allowed and a pair of strikeouts. Though she recorded three walks, there were no runs scored.
