Lady Rams Hold Off Saint Augustine's for 6-3 Victory

RALEIGH, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (22-11, 12-2 CIAA) held off the Saint Augustine's Falcons (12-18, 7-5 CIAA) for a key Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division victory. With the win, the Lady Rams improve to 7-1 in the division and remain on top of the division. The Lady Rams took the win behind some clutch defense that shut down a late rally by the hard-hitting Lady Falcons.

The Lady Rams took advantage of some fielding miscues by the Falcons as it took the Lady Rams just three hits to score six runs, thanks in part to five fielding errors by the Falcons. Junior third base Katrina Bartlett led the way with a one-for-two performance at the plate with her 10th home run of the season, three RBI and a pair of runs scored. Freshman outfielder Tiffany Massey added a one-for-three batting effort and freshman designated player Chyna Riley added a one-for-four effort.

It was in the fourth inning when Bartlett opened the scoring with a three-run home run that put the team on top 3-0. After allowing a pair of fifth inning runs to the Falcons that cut the WSSU lead down to just one run, the Lady Rams responded in the sixth inning when freshman catcher Mercedes Hargett reached base on an SAU fielding error that scored senior outfielder Andreya O'Brien as well as Bartlett to give the Lady Rams a 5-2 cushion. Freshman second base Jada Johnson rounded out the WSSU scoring in the seventh inning when an SAU error in the outfield allowed her to score. With the 6-2 lead in tow, the Lady Rams clamped down in the seventh inning and allowed just one seventh inning score to the Lady Falcons to close out the victory.

Daly (1-0) took the pitching victory with five innings in the circle. She finished the game with five hits and two runs allowed. She also finished with two strikeouts and no walks allowed. Freshman Chyna Riley came in for a pair of innings and finished the game with one run allowed and a strikeout.

With the win, the Lady Rams improve to 7-1 to remain on top of the CIAA Southern Division and will close out the regular season with a doubleheader against Johnson C. Smith at Salem College Field.
