WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (24-11, 14-2) claimed their fourth straight Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division title when the team completed the regular season with a 7-0 Senior Day win over the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (12-20, 8-8 CIAA), Friday afternoon. The Lady Rams took the win behind some clutch hitting and stellar defense to take the win as they scored seven runs on seven hits in the game.
The Lady Rams allowed just five hits in the game and took advantage of five fielding errors by the Golden Bulls. WSSU senior Tanaya Pettus led the way with three RBI on one hit. She got on base in every at-bat after going one-for-two at the plate with a double, a hit-by-pitch, and a walk. Freshman Chyna Riley added a pair of runs scored and two RBI with a one-for-four effort at the plate. Junior second base Monet Daly added a two-for-four effort at the plate with two runs scored.
The team kicked things off in the third inning when Riley hit into and RBI fielder's choice that, combined with a JCSU fielding error, scored Daly. The run was followed by a dropped fly ball by the Golden Bulls that scored Riley.
With the two-run lead, the Lady Rams added four fifth-inning runs when Pettus hit a two-RBI double. Pettus would also score on the Golden Bulls' second error of the inning to put the Lady Rams ahead, 6-0. The Lady Rams would cap the game in the sixth inning when Edgerton scored on an RBI single that scored junior Kiah Ruffin.
In addition to the team's strong offensive efforts, the Lady Rams added some stellar defense, including a second inning double play as well as an impressive foul catch by freshman catcher Mercedes Hargett.
WSSU senior Yasmin Lee (4-2) took home the pitching win, going all seven innings with five hits allowed and no runs allowed. She also allowed just two walks and added two strikeouts.
With the win, the Lady Rams finish the regular season with a 24-11 overall record and a 14-2 record in CIAA play and a 7-1 record in the CIAA Southern Division and finished the season with their fourth straight CIAA Southern Division win. The Lady Rams will enter the 2014 CIAA Softball Championship Tournament as the top seed in the division next week.
