PETERSBURG, VA – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (26-11) turned up their defensive efforts to take a key 2-0 win over the Chowan Hawks (16-30) to stay in the winner's bracket at the 2014 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Championship Tournament, Thursday afternoon. The Lady Rams took the win behind a stellar defensive effort as they held the Lady Hawks scoreless on five hits to take the victory.
The Lady Rams took the win behind some clutch hitting when senior catcher Francesca Edgerton hit a second-inning solo home run to go along with a fifth-inning RBI single by junior outfielder Kiah Ruffin. The two led the Lady Rams' offensive efforts as Ruffin went three-for-three at the plate with while Edgerton was one-for-three with a run scored and an RBI. Freshman pitcher Mercedes Hargett also had a strong batting effort, going one-for-two as well with a run scored.
The WSSU defense was on full display in the game, highlighted by a fifth-inning double play that ended the inning for the Hawks. Hargett (12-6) also took the pitching victory, going all seven innings of the game with five hits allowed, five strikeouts, and just three walks.
