ETTRICK, VA – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (27-11) advanced to the finals of the 2014 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Championship Tournament when the team took a 4-1 win over the Saint Augustine's University Lady Falcons (17-20), Saturday afternoon. The Lady Rams combined some strong hitting and some untimely fielding errors by the Lady Falcons to make their third trip to the championship finals in three seasons.
The Lady Rams scored one run each in the first, second, fourth, and sixth innings while allowing one sixth-inning run to the Lady Falcons to take the win. As a team, the Lady Rams totaled 10 hits in the game. Junior Monet Daly led the way with a three-for-four batting effort with two runs scored, and a double. Junior third base Katrina Bartlett added a one-for-four effort with a run scored. Freshman designated player Jada Johnson added a two-for-three effort with a run scored.
The Lady Rams kicked things off in the first inning when junior Kiah Ruffin hit an RBI sacrifice fly that scored Daly. Freshman pitcher Mercedes Hargett added an RBI double that scored junior third base Katrina Bartlett. Johnson scored on a Saint Augustine's fielding error at first base in the fourth inning. After allowing a sixth-inning run to the Lady Falcons, the Lady Rams answered in the bottom of the inning when Daly scored on a SAU fielding error to seal the win.
With the victory, the Lady Rams advance to the finals of the 2014 CIAA Softball Championship Tournament and will face the winner of the Saint Augustine's/Virginia Union game. The Lady Rams are scheduled to take the field at Noon tomorrow.
