CALIFORNIA, PA – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (28-13) took a tough 10-5 loss to the Bloomsburg Huskies (28-18), Saturday afternoon in the elimination round of the 2014 NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament. The Lady Rams could not match a furious late rally by the Huskies as WSSU was outscored 7-0 in the final three innings of the game. The rally erased a 5-4 fifth-inning lead by the Lady Rams.
The loss came in spite of a great effort by the Lady Rams. As a team, the Lady Rams finished the game with nine hits and just two fielding errors. Junior outfielder Kiah Ruffin led the way with a two-for-four effort at the plate with an RBI while freshman second base Jada Johnson added a two-for-two performance with a sacrifice hit and an RBI. Senior catcher Francesca Edgerton recorded the only extra base hit for the Lady Rams with a double.
Things looked good early for the Lady Rams as the team took a commanding four run lead in the fourth inning. All four runs came in the third inning. After scoring on a Bloomsburg wild pitch, the Lady Rams added back-to-back RBI hits from junior third base Katrina Bartlett and Edgerton. Johnson would later drive in Edgereton with an RBI single as well. The Lady Rams added a Ruffin RBI single in the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead. After allowing three runs to the Huskies in the fourth inning, the Ruffin added an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning to put the Lady Rams ahead 5-3. However, the Lady Rams would struggle from there on with Bloomsburg scoring six unanswered runs to seal the loss for the Lady Rams.
With the loss, the Lady Rams finish the 2014 season with their third Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) championship in four years and a third trip to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament.
