Lady Rams Fall Short in 12-3 Loss to Pfeiffer at UNCP Invitational Tournament

PEMBROKE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (0-6) closed out the UNC-Pembroke Invitational Tournament on a down note when the team took a 12-3 loss to the Pfieffer Falcons (5-4), Sunday morning. The Lady Rams had a solid day at the plate, but could not find an answer for the hard-hitting Falcons that totaled 16 hits in the game.

As a team, the Lady Rams finished the game with some strong numbers as they totaled nine hits in the game. Sophomore pitcher Mercedes Hargett led the way for the team with a three-for-three performance at the plate with a pair of doubles. Senior designated player Lauren Beaver provided the bulk of the WSSU offense with a two-for-three effort at the plate with two RBI. Sophomore second baseman Chyna Riley added a two-for-three effort with two runs scored.

The Lady Rams found themselves in trouble early and made an effort to rally, but their efforts fell short in the tough loss. After allowing four first inning runs, the Lady Rams answered with a run of their own in the inning when Beaver hit an RBI single to score Riley. After a second inning score by the Falcons left the Lady Rams trailing 5-1, the Lady Rams struck in the fourth inning with an RBI double from Beaver that scored Riley for the second time in the game. The Lady Rams struck again in the fourth inning when senior Kiah Ruffin scored on a Pfeiffer throwing error. The effort cut the WSSU deficit down to two runs, 5-3. However, the Lady Rams would not score any more while allowing seven runs to the Falcons over the next two innings, including allowing a pair of fifth-inning runs and five sixth-inning runs. The Lady Rams were held scoreless in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the WSSU loss.

Hargett (0-3) took the pitching loss as she went all six innings with 12 runs allowed (eight earned) on 16 hits. She recorded six strikeouts in the game.

Hargett and freshman Melissa Carillo were both named to the UNC-Pembroke Invitational All-Tournament team for their efforts over the weekend.

The Lady Rams will return to action next weekend to face a familiar foe when they head to Misenheimer, N.C. to take on the same Pfeiffer Falcons in a Friday doubleheader.
