WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (18-19, 11-2 CIAA) had to dig deep to pull out a clutch 2-1 win over the Saint Augustine's Lady Falcons (16-11, 9-4), Friday afternoon. The Lady Rams broke a late 1-1 tie to take the key Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division win.
The Lady Rams had to score The Lady Rams jumped out to a 1-0 lead after freshman catcher Melissa Carillo hit an RBI single to score senior short stop and put the Lady Rams on top, 1-0. After allowing a fourth-inning run to the Lady Falcons, the Lady Rams answered in the fifth-inning when sophomore pitcher Chyna Riley forced an SAU fielding error that allowed senior second base Monet Daly to score the winning fifth-inning run.
As a team, the Lady Rams had a solid outing with seven total team hits in the game while allowing just six to the Falcons. Carillo led the way for the Lady Rams with a two-for-two effort at the plate with an RBI. Daly went one-for-two at the plate with a triple, a run scored while senior shortstop Katrina Bartlett added a one-for-three effort with a double and a run scored.
Riley (4-8) took the pitching victory, going all seven innings with one run allowed (no earned). She allowed six hits with three strikeouts.
