WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (18-20, 11-3 CIAA) could not get out of their own way when the team took a tough 7-2 loss to the Saint Augustine's Lady Falcons (17-11, 10-4 CIAA), Friday afternoon. The Lady Rams took the loss in an error-filled game with the two teams combining for nine errors.
The Lady Rams fell into an early deficit, the Lady Rams mounted a late rally, but could not pull out the win. The Lady Rams allowed a pair of second inning runs, followed by three fourth-inning runs to trail the Falcons, 5-0. Though the Lady Rams answered with a pair of fifth-inning runs, the team was outscored 2-0 in the final three innings of the game to take the loss.
The Lady Rams had a solid offensive effort with six hits, but committed four fielding errors to take the loss. Sophomore pitcher Mercedes Hargett led the effort for the Lady Rams with a two-for-three performance at the plate with a double. Freshman Melissa Carillo added a one-for-three performance with an RBI while senior third base Katrina Bartlett went one-for-three with a run scored. The Lady Rams also left seven runners on base in the loss.
Hargett (8-11) took the pitching loss, going four innings with five runs allowed (one earned) and five strikeouts. Sophomore Chyna Riley also appeared for the Lady Rams. She went three innings with two runs allowed (none earned) and a strikeout.
With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 18-20 and 6-2 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The Lady Rams will return to action, Sunday afternoon when the team hosts the Shaw Lady Bears for Senior Day at 2:00 p.m. at Salem College Field.
