Rams Defense Steps Up in 5-4 Win Over Davis & Elkins

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (1-5) picked up their first win of the season when the Rams took a 5-4 win over the Davis & Elkins Senators (1-1) in game two of the doubleheader, Friday afternoon. The Rams combined a great start with some clutch defense to claim their first win of the season.

The WSSU defense took center stage in the game as Davis & Elkins was held to just four runs despite getting 11 hits. In the end, the Rams forced 12 Senator runners to be left on base in the game. WSSU sophomore outfielder Katherine Zimmer led the way for the Rams with a one-for-three effort at the plate with two runs scored. Junior third base Mercedes Hargett added a one-for-two effort with a home run, an RBI and two runs scored as well. Freshman first base Mesha Jones also added an RBI with two walks.

The Rams took the win behind some clutch offense as the team scored five runs on just four hits in the game.  The Rams wasted no time getting started as the team scored all five runs in the first three innings of the game before turning on their defense to claim the victory. After allowing an opening inning run to the Senators, WSSU junior third base Mercedes Hargett hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game. The Rams followed the effort with a second inning run when sophomore outfielder Katherine Zimmer scored on a Davis & Elkins fielding error. It was in the third inning when the Rams broke things open with three runs scored, including a pair of bases-loaded walks and an RBI groundout from sophomore catcher Melissa Carillo.

With the 5-1 lead, the Rams turned to their defense to finish the win as they held Davis & Elkins to just two runs, an RBI double and a wild pitch allowed a fifth inning run while an RBI single allowed a seventh-inning run to score, but the Rams would allow no more and closed out the day with the win.

With the win, the Rams improve to 1-5 overall. The team will not have long to rest as they will depart for Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to take part in the Snowbird Tournament.
