WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (4-8) completed a home doubleheader in style when the team took an impressive 8-4 win over the Brevard College Tornados (5-9). The Rams took the win behind a great offensive effort as some strong performances at the plate powered the Rams to the win.
The Rams took the win behind their top offensive performance of the season with a season-high eight runs in the game. The win came behind a 12-hit performance by the team. WSSU sophomore Tiarra Delaney led the way for the Rams with a three-for-three performance at the plate with two runs scored and a pair of RBI. Sophomore right fielder Katherine Zimmer added a two-for-four performance with a run scored and an RBI as well.
The Rams took advantage of their offensive output as the team scored in four of the six innings that the team batted in. The Rams scored five run in the first three innings of play, including a first inning run and two runs in the second and third innings to take a 5-3 lead over the Tornados. After a fourth-inning run by Brevard cut the WSSU lead down to one run, the Rams exploded for three fifth-inning runs and held Brevard to just one sixth-inning run to pull away with the victory.
WSSU junior Chyna Riley (3-1) took the pitching win. She went 5.2 innings in the win with four runs allowed (three earned). She also recorded a strikeout. Fellow junior Mercedes Hargett came in for 1.1 innings and recorded a pair of strikeouts.
