Rams Rally for 3-1 Win Over Millersville

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (8-10) used a late rally to take a 3-1 win over the Millersville Marauders (3-4), Monday afternoon. In a game that featured some stellar defense by both teams, the Rams broke out for three sixth-inning runs to claim their third straight home victory.

The Rams had to dig deep to claim the victory as strong defense was the order of the day for both teams. As a team, the Rams totaled five hits in the game and benefitted from four Millersville fielding errors to claim the win. WSSU sophomore designated player Samantha Gibbs led the way for the Rams with a two-for-three performance at the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Freshman shortstop Destiny Snipes added two RBI in the game as well.

Runs were hard to come by for the Rams and the Marauders played some great defense. The two teams played through a scoreless tie after the first five innings. Millersville struck first when they scored on a Rams wild pitch that left WSSU trailing 0-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning. It was then that the Rams broke out for three sixth-inning runs. Gibbs opened the scoring with an RBI single before Snipes added a two-RBI single that scored junior outfielder Idaysha Quinones and Gibbs.

WSSU junior pitcher Mercedes Hargett (4-5) took the pitching victory when she went all seven innings and allowed just three hits and one run (one earned) to the Marauders. She also recorded seven strikeouts as well.

The two teams would go on to complete the doubleheader later in the day. With the win, the Rams improve to 8-10 on the season. For more information on Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com
