Rams Take 5-3 Extra-Inning Win Over Millersville

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams  (9-10) rallied for the second time to take a 5-3 eight-inning win over the Millersville Marauders (3-5), Monday afternoon. After playing to a 3-3 tie after seven innings, WSSU freshman Taonya Stanely hit a walk-off double that gave the Rams their third straight victory.

Once again, the Rams and the Marauders played some strong defense in the game, but in the end, the Rams were able to claw their way to the victory with some timely offense. As a team, the Rams totaled eight hits in the game while allowing just six hits to the Marauders. WSSU sophomore designated hitter Samantha Gibbs recorded a two-for-three performance at the plate with a double and an RBI. Junior pitcher/second base Chyna Riley added a one-for-four effort with two runs scored.

The Rams and the Marauders played to a scoreless tie heading into the fourth inning. It was then that Millersville broke into the scoring column with an RBI double that left the Rams trailing 0-1. WSSU junior first base/pitcher Mercedes Hargett added an RBI triple in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game before a Gibbs RBI single scored Hargett and gave the Rams a 2-1 lead heading into the fifth inning. After Millersville answered with a pair of sixth-inning runs to leave the Rams trailing, 3-2, WSSU sophomore pinch runner Melissa Carillo scored on a Marauder wild pitch to tie the game, 3-3 and sent it into extra innings. After holding Millersville scoreless for the top of the eighth inning, the Rams set the state for Stanely's heroic two RBI double.

Hargett (5-5) took the pitching victory after coming in for 2.2 innings of relief. She allowed no runs and just one hit. She also recorded a pair of strikeouts. Riley got the pitching start and went 5.1 innings and allowed three runs (one earned). She also held Millersville to just five hits and added four strikeouts.

With the win, the Rams improve to 9-10 overall. The team will return to action, Wednesday afternoon when the team hosts the Benedict Tigers. For more information on Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
