RALEIGH, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (14-12, 3-0 CIAA) capped a long day with their best performance of the season when the team took a 14-2 win over the Lincoln (Pa.) Lady Lions (0-3, 0-3 CIAA), Friday evening. With the effort, the Rams took their third win of the day and extended their winning streak to five games.
The Rams' 14 runs marked a season-high for the team. As a team, the Rams finished the game with 11 total hits. Sophomore pitcher Katherine Zimmer led the way for the Rams with a three-for-four performance at the plate with a double, three runs scored, and two RBI. Sophomore outfielder Anna Marino added at two-for-three performance with two runs scored and two RBI. Junior second base Chyna Riley went two-for-two with two walks, a run scored, and two RBI.
The Rams opened the game on fire with five runs scored in the first inning and four second-inning runs to take an 8-0 lead. After scoring two more third-inning runs to go ahead 10-0, the Rams allowed two third-inning runs stay on top, 11-2. The Rams capped their scoring in the fourth inning when the team scored four runs to leave the final score 14-2. With the game in hand, the WSSU defense stepped in to close out the win, holding Lincoln (Pa.) scoreless to take the five-inning win.
Zimmer (1-2) got the pitching win when she went all five innings with two runs allowed (two earned). She finished the game with seven strikeouts and one walk allowed.
The win capped a three-game winning day on the opening day of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up and kept the Rams undefeated in conference play. The Rams will return to action tomorrow when the team takes on the Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings.
