Rams Clamp Down on Defense for 5-0 Win at Fayetteville State

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (21-17, 8-1 CIAA) turned to their defense to score a 5-0 road win over the Fayetteville State Broncos (10-17, 4-3 CIAA), Friday afternoon. The Rams took their third Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division behind their stellar defensive effort when they recorded their fifth shutout win of the season.

The Rams turned to their defense to win the game, but the team also played some solid offense as well. As a team, the Rams allowed no runs on just four hits in the game. Offensively, the Rams totaled five runs on six total hits in the game. Five WSSU players recorded one hit each in the game with doubles from junior Mercedes Hargett and freshman second base Jasmine Holloman. WSSU junior short stop Idaysha Quinones added a pair of RBI with a run scored despite not recording a hit.

The Rams took control of the game early and never looked back. The team opened the game on fire with three opening inning runs. Hargett kicked things off with an RBI double that scored freshman centerfielder Destiny Snipes. Junior first base Katherine Zimmer added an RBI single that scored junior third base Rebecca Demko while Quinones hit into a RBI fielder's choice that allowed Hargett to score. The Rams added a pair of third inning runs to round out the scoring in the game. Quinones earned her second RBI of the game when she reached base on a first base fielding error that scored Hargett for the second time in the game and left the Rams on top, 4-0. Freshman catcher Tiarra Delaney rounded out the scoring with an RBI single up the middle to score Quinones and kept the Rams on top, 5-0. From there, the WSSU kept their defensive efforts going to close out the division victory.

Hargett (13-10) took the pitching win. She finished the game with no runs allowed on just four hits. She also added five strikeouts with no walks.

With the win, the Rams improve to 21-17 overall and 8-1 in CIAA play. Most importantly, the team remains undefeated in CIAA Southern Division play at 3-0. The Rams and the Broncos would go on to complete the doubleheader later in the evening.
