Rams Open 2016 CIAA Softball Tournament with 11-2 Win Over Virginia Union

RALEIGH, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (27-21) softball team got the post season to a hot start when the team took an 11-2 win over the Virginia Union Lady Panthers (15-15), Thursday morning. The Rams took the win with a blazing hot batting performance on the day as the team scored 11 runs on 12 hits in the game. While the Rams' offense stole, the show the team played some solid defense as well, holding VUU to just two hits.

The Rams opened post-season play with one of their top overall efforts of the season. As a team, the Rams totaled 12 hits in the game. Junior first base Katherine Zimmer led the way with a three-for-three batting effort with a run scored and an RBI. Junior pitcher Mercedes Hargett added a two-for-three batting effort with a home run and three RBI. Sophomore catcher Mellissa Carillo went one-for-three with two RBI.

The scoring came early for the Rams as the team opened the game with eight first inning runs. Hargett got things started in a big way with a three-run home run to put the Rams ahead 3-0. Freshman designated player Tiara Delaney added a two-RBI that scored junior short stop Rebecca Demko and outfielder Destiny Snipes. Delaney was able to take advantage of a VUU fielding error to score as well with sophomore pinch runner Anna Marino closing out the inning with a score on an RBI single from junior first base Katherine Zimmer that left the Rams on top, 8-0. After allowing a third-inning run to the Panthers, the Rams answered in the bottom of the inning when junior left fielder Chyna Riley stole home to keep the Rams on top, 9-1. Virginia Union answered in the fourth inning before sophomore catcher Melissa Carillo rounded out the scoring with a two RBI single that scored freshman outfielder Idaysha Quinones and Demko. The scores left the Rams on top 11-2 where the team took home the victory.

Hargett (17-10) took the pitching victory, going all five innings with just two runs allowed (two earned) on seven hits. She also recorded 10 strikeouts with just one walk in the game.
