PEMBROKE, NC – It took a while for the Winston-Salem State Rams (0-1) to get started as the team took a 10-0 loss to the Shippensburg Raiders (1-0) at the UNCP Invitational. The Rams got six hits in the game, but the team was overpowered in the loss to the Raiders who turned their six hits into 10 runs in five innings.
Though the Rams took the tough loss, the team gave a solid overall effort in the game. WSSU had a solid hitting day, but the team made some critical fielding errors in the loss. WSSU senior catcher Mercedes Hargett went two-for-three at the plate while senior pitcher Chyna Riley added a two-for-three performance as well.
The Rams allowed runs in four of the five innings played, including four runs in the first and third innings before clamping down for a scoreless fourth inning.
Riley (0-1) took the pitching loss for the Rams, going all four innings with 10 runs allowed (two earned). She also recorded a pair of strikeouts.
The Rams didn't have long to wait for their next action as the team would go on to face West Virginia State in the second game of the day. For more information on Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
