PEMBROKE, NC- The Winston-Salem State Rams (1-2) picked up their first win of the season in dramatic fashion when the team got a clutch 6-5 win over the Kutztown Golden Bears (1-2), Saturday afternoon. The Rams took the win when senior pitcher Mercedes Hargett hit a walk off home run to lead the Rams to their first victory of the season.
The Rams broke out for a strong offensive performance to get the win. The Rams totaled eight hits in the game including a pair of extra base hits from Hargett, who led the Rams with a two-for-four performance with a double and a home run. Freshman shortstop Daijah Chambers added a two-for-four effort at the plate as well. Both Champers and Hargett both recorded RBI in the game while sophomore right fielder Jasmine Holloman added another one.
It was the Rams who struck first and last, but Kutztown made things exciting in the in-between. The Rams struck first when senior second base Chyna Riley scored on a KU wild pitch. After Kutztown added three third inning runs, the Rams answered with two in the bottom of the inning, scoring on a KU fielding error followed by an RBI sacrifice fly by Holloman that tied the game, 3-3. The Rams regained the lead with two sixth inning runs. Another KU fielding error allowed another WSSU run, which was followed by an RBI single by Chambers that scored senior Katherine Zimmer. Kutztown tied the game at 5-5 in the seventh inning. The tie set the stage for a dramatic home run from Hargett that sealed the victory.
In addition to the clutch hitting, Hargett (1-0) took the pitching win, going all seven innings and allowing eight hits and five runs (three earned). She also added seven strikeouts.
With the win, the Rams improve to 1-2 on the season, but the team would not have long to relax as they will face Shippensburg Raiders later in the day.
