Rams' Allow Late Rally in 10-8 Loss to Shippensburg

SALEM, VA – The Winston-Salem State Rams (3-13) had a great late rally, but the effort was not quite enough as the team took a 10-8 loss to the Shippensburg Raiders (10-7) on the first day of the Salem Invitational. The Rams took the loss in spite of a great offensive day with six fifth-inning runs in the tough loss.

The Rams had a solid day at the plate with 11 total hits in the game, including four home runs. WSSU sophomore shortstop Destiny Snipes led the way for the Rams with a three-for-four performance at the plate with two home runs, two runs scored, and three RBI in the game. Freshman designated player Sydnee Brown added two hits with a double, a run scored, and an RBI. Seniors Mercedes Hargett and Rebecca Demko both added home runs as well. Demko finished the day with two RBI while Hargett finished with three.

The Rams opened the game on a high note, but soon cooled off as Shippensburg took control. However, the Rams were able to battle back with a late rally that fell just short for the Rams. Demko got things stared in a big way with a solo home run in the first inning, but the Rams allowed a run to the Raiders in the bottom of the inning. Snipes would break the tie with a second inning home run of her own and put the Rams back on top, 2-1. Things got tough for the Rams as the team allowed four runs to the Raiders in the bottom of the second inning.

The Rams would battle back to take control with a huge fifth inning effort. It was Hargett who would do much of the damage when she hit a three-run home run Brown followed the effort with an RBI double before Snipes hit a two-run home run that left the Rams on top, 8-6. The Rams would not remain in control when the team allowed a fifth-inning run to the Raiders and then allowing a four-run sixth inning to the Raiders to take the tough loss.

Hargett (3-7) took the pitching loss, going six innings and allowing 10 runs (six earned). She also recorded four strikeouts with no walks allowed.

The Rams would not have long to rest as the team would go on to face the Indiana (Pa.) Hawks to close out day one of the Salem Invitational. For more information on Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
