Hargett Strikes Out Seven in 8-0 Win Over Indiana (Pa.)

SALEM, VA – The Winston-Salem State Rams (4-13) had one of their best performances of the season when the team took a dominating 8-0 five-inning win over the Indiana (Pa.) Hawks (1-1), Friday. The Rams took the win behind a dominating performance from senior pitcher Mercedes Hargett as she struck out seven of the 18 batters that she faced in the win.

The Rams used some timely base running along with some strong hitting to take the win. The Rams scored eight runs on just five hits. It was Hargett who led the hitting attack by the Rams, going one-for-two at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI. Sophomore short stop Destiny Snipes and freshman designated player Sydney Brown added a pair of RBI as well.

The Rams spread out their offensive effort with the team scoring five fifth-inning runs to seal the victory. The team opened the day on a high note when Snipes reached base on an IUP fielding effort that allowed Hargett to score. Jones would follow the effort with an RBI double that scored Snipes in turn and left the Rams on top, 2-0. Sophomore second base Jasmine Holloman added an RBI sacrifice groundout in the third inning to leave the Rams ton top, 3-0.

It was in the fifth-inning that the Rams would really break things out with five runs. Senior outfielder Anna Marino kicked things off with an RBI double to start the inning. Hargett would add another RBI single as well. Brown would add a two-RBI double to follow the effort while Snipes hit a two-RBI double to give the Rams an 8-0 lead and to close out the five-inning victory.

Hargett (4-7) took the pitching win behind a stellar performance. She held the Hawks to just two hits with just one walk. She also led the way with seven strikeouts.

With the win, the Rams improve to 4-13. The team will return to action tomorrow to close out the Salem Invitational when the team faces East Stroudsburg in the morning, followed by closing the weekend against Bloomfield in the afternoon.
