CHARLOTTE, NC – There was no need for coffee for the Winston-Salem State Rams (6-16, 2-1 CIAA) Sunday morning when the team took a 19-5 win over the Lincoln (Pa.) Lady Lions (2-8, 1-2 CIAA) in the final day of the 2017 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up. The Rams took advantage of some Lincoln (Pa.) miscues to claim a big win in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The Rams turned some strong hitting and some smart base-running to pull out the key victory. As a team, the Rams scored a season-high 19 run on just nine hits in the game. WSSU sophomore second base Jasmine Holloman led the way for the Rams with a two-for-four hitting effort with two runs scored and two RBI. Junior Anna Marino added four runs scored and had the only extra-base hit of the game for the Rams with a double.
The Rams struck early and often in the game. The team opened the game with a pair of first inning runs with Marino scoring on a passed ball, followed by senior Rebecca Demko scoring on another passed ball. The Rams struck again with seven second-inning runs. Five of the seven runs came on passed balls as an RBI single from senior Chyna Riley scored Holloman and was the only earned run scored of the inning. Marino scored on a fielding error. The inning was capped when senior first base Mercedes Hargett a final score on a passed ball that left the Rams on top, 9-0. The Rams didn't need any passed balls to score in the third inning when Marino's RBI double scored senior designated player Samantha Gibbs. The hit was followed by a Holloman RBI single that scored Marino and kept the Rams ahead, 11-0. The Rams scored again in the fourth inning when Demko scored on a passed ball and a throw attempt to keep the Rams ahead 12-0. The Lions would not go down quietly, scoring five fourth-inning runs. However, the Rams answered with seven fifth-inning runs to put the game away. The Rams went on to hold Lincoln (Pa.) scoreless in the bottom of the inning to take the 19-5 victory.
WSSU senior Chyna Riley (2-0) got the pitching win, going all five innings with five runs allowed (five earned) with three strikeouts five walks.
With the win, the Rams improve to 6-16 overall and 2-1 in CIAA play. The team will return to action later in the day when the team takes on the Virginia Union Lady Panthers.
