Rams Take 4-1 Loss at Pfeiffer

MISENHEIMER, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (7-21) gave a solid effort, but the team could not get the runs they needed across in the plate in a 4-1 loss to the Pfeiffer Falcons (31-3), Tuesday afternoon. After struggling to hit the ball in the previous game, the Rams found their hitting stroke in game two of the doubleheader, but the team could not get the runs they needed across the plate in the tough loss.

As a team, the Rams had a solid hitting effort in the game. The Rams totaled five hits in the game, but were held to just one run. WSSU sophomore second base Jasmine Holloman, who has recorded at least one hit in six of her last seven games, including leading the Rams with a two-for-three batting performance with a walk against the Falcons. Freshman right fielder Daijah Chambers added a one-for-three batting effort, including her first career home run in the game.

The final score overshadowed another strong defensive performance by the Rams. All four of the Falcons' runs came in two innings. The Rams allowed three third inning runs to the Falcons before Chambers answered with a fourth-inning solo home run. From there, the Rams held Pfeiffer to just one more run in the game, but the team would not score the runs they needed to rally for the win.

WSSU senior pitcher Chyna Riley (2-4) took the pitching loss with the start and going two innings. She finished with two runs allowed (two earned) on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Fellow senior pitcher Mercedes Hargett came in for four innings, allowing two runs (two earned) with just one walk allowed.

With the loss, the Rams fall to 7-21 overall, but the team will not have long to wait for their next action. The Rams will open Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division play, Saturday when the team hosts the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos in a 2:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon doubleheader at Twin City Field.
