WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (10-28) gave a great effort, but the team could not quite overcome some defensive struggles in an 11-3 loss to the King (Tenn.) Tornados (29-17), Tuesday evening. The Rams had some strong showings on both sides of the ball at times, but the team struggled to put it all together in the tough loss.
As a team, the Rams managed a solid hitting effort in the game. The Rams totaled seven hits, but were limited to just three runs in the game. WSSU sophomore outfielder Destiny Snipes led the way for the Rams with a two-for-three effort with a home run. She was the only WSSU player to record multiple hits in the game.
The Rams started the game on a high two when they answered a pair of opening inning runs by the Tornados with an RBI single from senior pitcher Mercedes Hargett drove in fellow senior Rebecca Demko. The effort left the Rams trailing, 2-1. The Rams kept the game in reach until the third inning when the team allowed five runs to the Tornados and left the Rams trailing, 7-1. The Rams allowed another fourth-inning run to fall behind, 8-1. From there, the Rams turned on their defense, holding the Tornados scoreless for the fifth and sixth innings. However, the team allowed three seventh-inning runs to fall behind 11-1. From there, Snipes added a solo home run while Demko hit an RBI single that scored freshman Daijah Chambers and left the Rams with three runs. However, the team was unable to score anymore and ended the day with the 11-3 loss.
Hargett (7-18) took the pitching loss, starting the game and going four innings with eight runs allowed (seven earned) and two strikeouts and two walks. Fellow senior Chyna Riley came in for three innings with three runs allowed (three earned).
With the loss, the Rams fall to 10-28. The team will return to action, Saturday when the team hosts the Saint Augustine's Falcons in a noon Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division doubleheader.
