Rams Close 2017 Regular Season with 9-0 Win Over Elizabeth City State

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (14-29, 10-6 CIAA) closed the 2017 regular season in style when the team took an impressive 9-0 five-inning win over the Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings (3-26, 2-11 CIAA), Sunday afternoon. The win gave the Rams their third straight win to end the regular season and some momentum heading into the post-season.

The Rams took the win behind a great performance on both sides of the ball. As a team, the Rams totaled nine runs in five innings and just six hits. WSSU freshman shortstop Daijah Chambers led the way for the Rams with a two-for-two performance at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI. She was the only Ram with multiple hits.

The Rams wasted little time in taking control of the game, including scoring six first inning runs. Senior third base Rebecca Demko started things off with a sacrifice fly that scored sophomore second base Jasmine Holloman. Senior Chyna Riley followed the effort, scoring on a wild pitch. Junior designated player Samantha Gibbs hit into an RBI fielder's choice that allowed senior pitcher Mercedes Hargett to score before Chambers hit a bases-clearing three-RBI single that she was also able to score on as well and left the Rams on top, 6-0. The Rams added three more runs in the fourth inning when Chambers scored on a double steal. Holloman added an RBI groundout to third base before Demko hit an RBI double that scored  Riley and gave the Rams a 9-0 cushion before some shutdown defense closed out the victory.

Hargett (10-19) got the start and the pitching win, going two innings with no runs allowed and holding ECSU to no hits and recorded six strikeouts. Riley came in for the final three innings and allowed no runs on four hits. She also added six strikeouts of her own.

With the win, the Rams finish the regular with a 14-29 overall record and a 10-6 record in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) CIAA play. The team finishes the season deadlocked in a tie with Johnson C. Smith for third place in the CIAA Southern Division. The Rams will await the announcement of their opponents for the upcoming 2017 CIAA Softball Championship Tournament next weekend.
