CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams were rewarded for a great 2017 season when three Rams were named to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) All-Conference Team. Featuring one of the top offensive teams in the CIAA, the Rams earned their way to the conference honors behind some stellar efforts this season.
WSSU sophomore Destiny Snipes led the way for the Rams, earning first team All-CIAA honors at the designated player position. She earned the spot after leading the CIAA in home runs (13) and ranked fifth in the conference in RBI this season. For the season, she also had a .363 batting average.
The Rams' senior duo of utility Mercedes Hargett and third base Rebecca Demko both earned second team All-CIAA spots. Hargett earned the spot after playing both the pitcher and infielder position. She finished the season ranked third in the CIAA in strikeouts (128) and she also ranked second in home runs (12). She also compiled a .315 batting average. Demko earned the spot after finishing the season with a .921 fielding percentage with 60 putouts and 72 assists on 127 total chances. Offensively, she finished the season with a .336 batting average with 21 RBI and three home runs. She also added 20 runs scored.
The honors didn't stop at the all-conference team as sophomore catcher Sydnee Brown was named to the CIAA All-Rookie team. She earned the spot after playing in 41 games and compiling a .263 batting average with 16 RBI and two home runs. Defensively, she compiled a .953 fielding percentage with 110 putouts on 128 total chances. She also caught four runners stealing.
With the honors, the Rams will turn their efforts to their defense of their CIAA championship as the team competes in the 2017 CIAA Softball Championship Tournament. The Rams will open the tournament against the top-seeded Chowan Hawks in a noon game at the Petersburg Sports Complex.
