WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State (0-5) Rams softball team gave a strong offensive effort, but the team could not hold off the hard-hitting Barton Bulldogs (3-5) in a 16-6 loss. The Rams had a solid offensive game with six runs scored. However, the Rams could not hold the hard-hitting Barton Bulldogs at bay in the loss.
As a team, the Rams had a strong offensive outing in the tough loss. The team tied a season-high with six runs in the game. The Rams scored the runs on nine hits. Senior designated player Samantha Gibbs led the way for the Rams with a two-for-four batting effort that included two home runs and four runs batted in (RBI). Freshman Nyla Howard was two-for-four as well with a double while sophomore Erica Davis added a two-for-three effort with a double.
The Rams found themselves trailing early, but the team showed some much needed heart to tie the game. The Rams allowed four first inning runs to the Bulldogs along with another third inning run to leave the Rams trailing, 0-5. The team struck in a big way when Gibbs hit a three-run home run to start things off. Freshman third base Kortney Thomas added a two RBI single as well that scored juniors Daijah Chambers and Destiny Snipes. The effort tied the game, 5-5. Things then got tough for the Rams as the team allowed a fourth inning run to the Bulldogs along with two fifth inning runs before running into major struggles in the sixth inning when the team allowed eight runs to the Bulldogs to fall behind, 16-5. Gibbs would homer for the second time in the game, but it was all the effort the Rams could muster as the team ended the day with the 16-6 loss.
Freshman pitcher Tia Robinson (0-2) took the pitching loss, going 5.2 innings and allowing 16 runs (13 earned) in the game. She also added four strikeouts and allowed just two walks. Sophomore Erica Davis came in for 0.1 innings with two hits allowed with no runs.
