Winston-Salem State Claims Four CIAA Softball Weekly Honors

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston-Salem State University softball team was rewarded for a great week when the team brought home four weekly honors from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), Wednesday. WSSU sophomore Erica Davis was named the CIAA Pitcher of the Week while freshman outfielder Nyla Howard was named the CIAA Offensive Player of the Week while junior infielder Daijah Chambers was named the CIAA Defensive Player of the Week. Head coach LaTaya Hilliard-Gray rounded out the week when she was named the CIAA Softball Coach of the Week.

The Rams took the honors after claiming a pair of impressive non-conference home wins over Bowie State, including a 9-0 win in game one of the doubleheader and a 14-5 win in game two of the doubleheader.

Davis and Chambers both took honors for their strong defensive play. Davis was named the CIAA Pitcher of the Week after pitching both games of the doubleheader. She finished the week with a 1.40 earned run average (ERA). She held the Bulldogs to just 12 hits and two earned runs. She totaled eight strikeouts for the week. Chambers was named the CIAA Defensive Player of the Week when she totaled a 1.000 fielding percentage after a putout and five assists in six total chances at second base.

Howard was named the CIAA Offensive Player of the Week after a dynamic batting performance. She finished the week with a .429 batting average. She went three-for-seven at the plate with two runs scored and four runs batted in (RBI) in the doubleheader.

Hilliard-Gray was named the CIAA Softball Coach of the Week after keeping the team's recent hot streak going. The Rams scored a total of 23 runs in a doubleheader win over Bowie State. After claiming a 9-0 win in game one of the doubleheader, she led the team to a 14-5 win in game two. The win was the team's fifth win in their last six games.

The Rams will return to action, Friday when the team opens CIAA Southern Division play in a doubleheader at Fayetteville State. Game one is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
